Heat & Work 013 D86

Heat & Work 013 D86

quot;Heat and Workquot; is a two part project - an encased turbine at the Salford end of the tunnel and a free-standing “thermometer” at the Manchester end. Both are illuminated structures, the turbine made as a complete unit integrating LED colour-changing fittings behind each fin, and set in a stainless steel and glass housing. The thermometer is a linear quot;lightpipequot; fitting with a stainless steel supporting pier.

These two items, representing “heat and work”, draw loosely on James Joule's (born Salford 1818) experiments on measuring energy. They also reflect the dynamic of the city itself - the flow of traffic through the tunnels driving the turbine and the level of activity registering as changes in temperature.
